Our Origin
Wayocari is the name of a village located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, 75 km from the city of Cusco and 40 km from Machu Picchu—one of the most important destinations in the Americas—renowned for its history, stunning landscapes, and diverse climates.
The vineyard sits on the right bank of the Vilcanota River at over 2,900 m a.s.l., on the slopes of the snow-capped Pitusiray (5,000 m).
The selected variety is Tannat, imported from Bordeaux, France. It has adapted perfectly to the altitude, contributing high levels of tannins and polyphenols to an extreme high-altitude wine, with a temperature range from 0 °C at night to 28 °C during the day, delivering a unique color, aroma, flavor, and intensity.
The first to write about the introduction of the vine in Peru was Fray Vicente de Valverde, the first bishop of Cusco and South America. In a letter addressed to the King of Spain in 1539, Valverde wrote: “There is great abundance throughout the land; it is an exceptional land for vineyards.”
Pedro de Cieza de León (1518–1554) summarized Peru’s winemaking activity in 1540, noting Cusco as one of the first places with great promise for producing quality wines.
For centuries, these rich franco-clay soils were cultivated with crops for the Inca Court, nourished by abundant water from rainfall and the melting snow of the surrounding mountains.
The grapes are hand-harvested and transported to Curahuasi, where they undergo fermentation and rest for 45 days in stainless steel tanks, before aging for 12 months in French oak barrels.
